Wiltshire Golf
Friday 24th May saw Wiltshire County Seniors welcomed Gloucestershire to West Wilts on Friday 24th May, for our second Channel league game of the season.
With probably the strongest Wiltshire senior squad ever assembled, on paper, with an average handicap of less than 1, we were hopefully looking forward to another positive result following on from our success against Devon.
With Gloucestershire having played a practice round the day before and a stay over locally, they arrived bright eyed and bushy tailed whereas the Wiltshire side travelling from all corners of the county as well as Simon down from Cheltenham and Mr Snape train bound from London and running late led the captain to an anxious early morning start.
We were welcomed by beautiful sunshine and a course in fantastic condition with Mike White as our home West Wilts player, leading us off with the opening shot in the morning Greensomes. A slight upset to the normal Wiltshire form saw us have a great morning winning 4 of the 5 matches so a very palatable chips and sandwich lunch holding a 4-1 lead.
The form continued into the PM singles with 4 wins and a half in the first 5 matches. The captain fell to a defeat however, with 5 wins and 3 halved matches we ended up with a fantastic result of 10 1/2 points to 4 1/2
As of today that puts us at the top of the table albeit very early in the season and having played two matches, both at home.
Our next game will be a tricky away fixture to Dorset down at the Isle of Purbeck on the 10th June.
