A glorious sunny day welcomed us to Kingsdown Golf Club for our first home match of the season, and following on from our first match defeat, we were keen to make amends against what would be a strong Dorset side.
With two new members into the squad (Gary Watts and Greg Finney both from North Wilts GC), the morning Greensomes got under way, and indeed it proved to be close, ending in a 2.5 points each, (Gary and Greg paired together, securing their first point for the county, well done guys! ). As is often the case, putting was the big deciding factor in these matches, with the home side missing several opportunities, whilst the away team sank crucial ones at crucial times.
A quick chat and bite to eat at lunchtime and on to the afternoon singles: All matches were close throughout the afternoon, and from the beginning it looked very positive with the first three outings all securing a win for the Wiltshire team. The middle groups were all close affairs while the last 3 matches were all down. So, with the first 7 matches concluded, Wiltshire were 5-2 up, but with the last 3 matches all favouring Dorset, a halved match seemed likely. And with jsut the last pair on the course, Simon Dymoke (Vice Captain) birdied the 16th, to make the match all square moving to the 17th. With both balls on the green, Dorset putted first and knocked it 4 feet passed the hole, while Simon left his putt on the edge. Then, having not missed a putt all afternoon to everyone’s surprise the Dorset player missed!! This guaranteed Simon the half and victory in the overall match 8-7.
Congratulated to the whole team for showing great camaraderie and fighting spirit throughout the day. Well done to the new team members for securing 3 out of 4 points on their debut, and to Colin Edwards who was -4 at the conclusion of his match on 17th.
First points on the board in the league and now we look forward to our next match at home to Somerset at tricky North Wilts on 27th June.
