Day 2 saw Wiltshire take on the powerful Gloucestershire side, and the early portents were not promising. Despite being ill Elis Bright (Cumberwell Park) bravely chose to play, but he came up against an in form Milan Reed (more of whom later) and was soon back in bed! Harry Dickins took on another form player in Brandon Skidmore and despite battling gamely lost on 15.
However the next 4 players, Lewy Hayward, Garry Slade, Nick Korynevsky and Tom Scullion all triumphed, and a half from veteran Josh Loughrey meant that Wiltshire led 4.5 to 3.5 at the break.
With Lewy Hayward and Harry Dickins putting the first point on the board for the home team and a hard-fought half delivered by Garry Slade and Nick Korynevsky, another half from one of the last 2 pairs would be enough for a famous victory … however, despite both games going to the wire, Gloucestershire prevailed by the narrowest of margins 7.25 to 6.75. An amazing effort of which Ali James and his young team can be justifiably proud.
Tuesday saw the England Golf County Finals qualifier - 36 holes of stroke play, 6-man teams with every shot counting. The winners would be the team with the lowest combined gross score, plus the individual title was up for grabs. The 2 championships were diametrically opposed in results and predictability. Gloucestershire were hot favourites, and wore that favouritism comfortably posting an amazing 37 under par for their 12 rounds, with Somerset a distant second on 13 under, and Wiltshire a creditable 3rd a further 9 shots back. The individual competition was a different matter with Brandon Skidmore posting a seemingly unbeatable -12, only to be surpassed by Milan Reed who chipped in for eagle on his last hole to win by 1!
Notable home performance came from Lewy Hayward (-8) who was 4th, Tom Scullion (-5) who was 6th, and Tom Law (-4) T 7th. All the Wiltshire team acquitted themselves incredibly well, but it was the collective brilliance of the Gloucestershire ‘Green Army’ who won the day and will now represent the South West at national level.
