Friday 27th July, and Wiltshire host Somerset at North Wilts Golf Club. And we were delighted to welcome our County President, Gill Loughrey, to support the home team by introducing the morning matches on the 1st tee. Things got off to a promising start in the morning greensomes, with Wiltshire leading 3-2. but both sides fancied their chances in the afternoon singles!! After nine holes of all play, it was extremely tight, Wilts down in 4, Somerset up in 5 and one match all square. As the matches progressed, around the 14th hole the intensity continued with both early matches going Somerset's way and then the next 3 went to the home side. So, with 5 matches remaining on the course, leads were changing more often than a Premier League football managers tenure!! At one stage the last two matches out, Simon Dymoke and Al Paterson were both up, but by the 16th those matches were all square - leading to the team Captains' heart rate rising as fast as the afternoon temperature. To secure the win, we needed just 1.5 points from 5 matches, Colin Edwards won on the 16th, but messages rung out that the remaining were nip-and-tuck. Martyn Evans was 3 down with 5 to play and by the time he reached the 17th green, where several matches had finished and team members awaited news, he had fought back to all square going up 18. Then Graeme Wright approached the 17th green and gave a nod to say he was up in the match, and duly sank a long putt from the front edge of the green to close out his match, giving the home side the vital point needed to secure the win. Martyn secured the half in his match and the final 2 matches on the course brought in a further one and half points.
