A squad of 12 players represented Wiltshire at the SW Inter County Match Week at East Devon GC 30th June - 2nd July.
Alas, not everything went smoothly, as thick fog descended on the course course and the first session on the Monday morning and unfortunately curtailed this session to 9 holes. Wiltshire had drawn a tough match against Gloucestershire to start and over the reduced hole format, they narrowly missed out - losing just 3-2 in the rapid format. The afternoon saw Cornwall out for revenge against Wiltshire, having been convincingly beaten on home turf last year, and revenge was served, with a 4-1 defeat to the Cornish ladies.
During the sweltering heat of Tuesday, Wiltshire unfortunately suffered more defeats, losing 5-0 to Somerset, although this overall score didn't fully reflect the closeness of each individual game. and then losing to Devon 4 1/2 - 1/2.
Then on the final morning, our match against Dorset was in teh balance, with Wiltshire looking like they might secure a victory, But then, unfortunately, the games were turned over in the final moments, with Dorest winning 3 1/2 - 1 1/2.
Despite Wiltshire having the strongest squad for many years, and you could argue the most experienced compared to the other counties, they still lack the numbers of players in comparison. Morale, enthusiasm and desire to win is strong and there is always hope for next year!
On a celebratory note, Captain Claire Smith, 2nd Team Captain Melissa Schroeder and Ellie Webster were all awared colours. Ellie is about to depart UK shores to pursue her academic and golf coaching in the USA and we wish her all the best look forward to her returning to wear Wiltshire coloirs!
We thank all the supporters for coming to watch and look forward to Yeovil GC in 2026!
