Wiltshire Golf currently has four active Rules Officials, three with the highest (Level 3) qualification and one with Level 2 (with another four currently attending the England Golf Level 2 Rules School).
Wiltshire Golf Referees officiate at approximately 10 County events per year. Each event requires advanced visits to check the following: course conditions, club local rules, course markings and set-up requirements for the day. We will then publish any necessary "additional local rules" and a "pace of play" timing sheet. On the day, referees will arrive early to ensure everything is in place and then make themselves available on the course to provide speedy rules assistance and monitor pace of play. Wiltshire Golf also provide the same service for the South West Counties Golf Association and to a selection of individual Wiltshire clubs who want to "raise the bar" in promoting the profile of some of their Open or Club events.
In connection with the golf rules, Wiltshire Golf offers a support partnership to every club in Wiltshire. Work closely with club managers, head greenkeepers and committee members to ensure that their courses are correctly marked up and have the correct local rules in place. It is quite concerning how many clubs do not have a correct set of Local Rules, with some still using terminology that is pre-2019, the year of the major change to the Rules of Golf.
Throughout the year, Wiltshire Golf offers a programme of "Rules Evenings" to clubs across the county. This is very much a social event with a presentation on key rules, an open discussion with advice for players and a quiz to engage with the audience. If you think that your club would benefit from a visit from our Rules Team for any of the above services, then please ask them to contact Scott Talbert on secretary@wiltshiregolf.org or refereeswg@gmail.com
